Svitla Smart Talk: Core ML. Vol 1: Natural Language. Event summary.

On April 1st, 2021, Svitla Systems hosted a webinar led by Kostiantyn Bilyk (Team Lead, Lead iOS Software Engineer) to talk about “Natural Language.”

The webinar is part one of a series reviewing Apple’s Core Machine Learning (ML) framework which allows access to the Machine Learning API developed for macOS and iOS. In future episodes, the Vision, Speech and Sound parts of this framework will be covered.

Kostiantyn began with an overall description of what is Machine Learning and how it is connected to other fields like Artificial Intelligence and Data Mining. He then proceeded to add simple examples for each of the areas like Tesla Autopilot using reinforced learning to get constantly increasing results for their ML model or the success of MIT Watson in analyzing big amounts of data to move forward in cancer cure research.

In addition, there was an example of fields where ML should be presented more like in the case of the Ever Given ship which was blocking the Suez Canal as a result of human error; one that can be easily prevented by respectively trained ML models, helping prevent the economic catastrophe that it actually was.

Furthermore, there was a review of the Core ML framework and its components with different abilities that are widely used in Apple’s applications and how they can be beneficial for different projects. Also, the Natural Language API was reviewed in detail.

Last but not least, the final part of the webinar was a demo session where Apple’s NL capabilities were tested as examples of tagging names, locations, and companies in different text sources containing not only commonly used names but also created by authors using languages other than English.

To wrap up, Kostiantyn provided the following thoughts:

• Machine Learning today is a widely used approach for developing outstanding services
• Industry leaders have a lot of success stories in ML, AI and DL implementation
• Apple gave access to the Core ML to all developers to enable them to create better apps
• The Natural Language API is easy to use and has a lot of functionality to be used right now
